Preparation from 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone in ethylene dichloride solution by introduction of the chloromethyl group into aromatic ring by treatment with 37% formalin and hydrogen chloride in the presence of zinc chloride at 60–65° (76–68%)[Blanc (Chloromethylation) reaction].
