1-(3-cyano-3,3-diphenylpropyl)-4-phenylpiperidine-4-carboxylic acid monohydrochloride is used as an anti-diarrheal agent for the symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea. It helps to reduce the frequency and severity of diarrhea by slowing down the movement of the gut.
In order to discourage abuse, preparations of difenoxin hydrochloride usually contain subclinical amounts of atropine sulfate. At high doses, difenoxin acts like morphine, which is a potent opioid analgesic. The presence of atropine sulfate helps to minimize the potential for abuse and addiction associated with the use of difenoxin hydrochloride.
