It is a colorless, oily liquid that is highly toxic and has a garlic-like odor. This organophosphorus compound is a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the nervous system. As a result, it can disrupt the normal functioning of the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscle twitching, weakness, and respiratory failure. Due to its high toxicity, di(2-fluoroethyl) fluorophosphate has been used as a chemical warfare agent and is classified as a Schedule 1 substance under the Chemical Weapons Convention. It is also used in some pesticides and as a reagent in organic synthesis.
