9-alpha-arabinofuranosyl-8-azaadenine, also known as 8-aza-adenine arabinoside or vidarabine, is a synthetic nucleoside analog with antiviral properties. It is structurally similar to adenine, a naturally occurring nucleoside, but with a nitrogen atom replacing one of the carbon atoms in the adenine ring, making it an 8-aza derivative. The arabinofuranosyl group attached to the 9-position of the 8-aza-adenine molecule enhances its stability and bioavailability. Vidarabine is primarily used in the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, including herpes encephalitis and herpes zoster ophthalmicus, by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis and replication. It is administered intravenously or topically, depending on the severity and location of the infection. Although vidarabine has been largely replaced by more effective antiviral drugs like acyclovir, it still holds historical significance as one of the first nucleoside analogs to be used in clinical practice for the treatment of viral infections.
