The reactivity of a series of substituted phencyclones in the diene synthesis reaction with cyanoethylenes was studied by a spectrophotometric method. The activation parameters of the reactions were determined. An analysis of the reactivity in the investigated series was made from the standpoint of the stabilization energies, charge interactions, and localization energies. It was shown that the activity of the investigated systems is determined by a combination of orbital donor-acceptor interaction and localization energies. It was shown that the rules of the "reactivity-selectivity" relationship such as "more reactive, more selective" and "more reactive, less selective," are only observed where the factors determining the relative and absolute reactivity coincide. The reason for the enhanced sensitivity of Diels-Alder reactions with participation of cyclones to localization effects are discussed.
