Lead oxide vapor mixed with N2 gas was quenched on a cold substrate (ca. 15 K) in a closed cycle cryo-cooler.The i.r. and Raman spectra of the condensed material revealed several sharp features which were analysed in terms of the vibrational modes of PbO, Pb2O2 and Pb4O4 species.Normal coordinate analyses of the data confirm the ring structure for the dimer (point group D2h) and a distorted cube structure for the tetramer (point group Td).
