, p. 38 - 40 (2007/10/03)
Ternary complexes of MnII, FeII, CoII and NiII with o-methoxybenzoic acid as primary ligand (HL) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as secondary ligand (HA) at pH 8.5 (μ = 0.1 M) and their binary complexes at different pH have been investigated by ionophoretic technique at 35°. The stability constants (log KMLAML) for the formation of mixed ligand complexes of the above metals with HL and HA have been evaluated.

Oxygen-17 nmr studies have been made on manganese(II) complexes with the ligands NTA, EGTA, and EDTA. From consideration of paramagnetic shifts in the 17OH2 nmr line and infrared studies, it is concluded that the following species are present in aqueous solution: Mn(NTA)(H2O)2-, Mn(EGTA)2- (hexadentate), and Mn(EDTA)(H2O)2- (seven-coordinate Mn(II)). The kinetic parameters for water exchange are the following (k1 is per H2O): Mn(NTA)(H2O)2-, k1(25°) = (1.50 ± 0.8) × 109 sec-1, ΔH* = 6.6 kcal mol-1, ΔS* = 6 cal mol-1 deg-1; Mn(EDTA)(H2O)2-, k1(25°) = 4.4 × 108 sec-1, ΔH* = 7.7 kcal mol-1, ΔS* = 7 cal mol-1 deg-1. Comparison of substitution on Mn(NTA)(H2O)2- with water exchange is made. The relations of the 17O nmr data to epr and proton nmr data are discussed.
