Description

Phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) from Bacillus cereus is a 298-residue protein that belongs to the class of ubiquitous enzymes. PI-PLC is characterized by a single globular domain and folds into eight βα barrel sheets, with only six βα units found in the barrel, lacking helices between strands IV and V and V and VI. It plays a crucial role in the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol (PI) and other related substrates, leading to the formation of cyclic-phosphate.

Uses

1. Used in Cleavage of GPI-anchored Proteins:
PI-PLC is used as an enzyme for the cleavage of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor of proteins, such as lynx1, from the plasma membrane. This application is essential for studying the detachment of proteins from the cell membrane and their subsequent cellular functions.
2. Used in Invasion Assays:
PI-PLC is employed in invasion assays to test the involvement of phospholipase A2 (PLAP) in the invasion of Trypanosoma cruzi to human epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) cells. This application helps in understanding the role of PI-PLC in cellular invasion processes and the underlying mechanisms.
