It is derived from the parent compound 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (terephthalic acid) by forming an ester with one of its carboxylic acid groups and a phenol molecule. 1,3-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, monophenyl ester is a white crystalline solid and is an important intermediate in the synthesis of various polymers, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is widely used in the production of plastic bottles, fibers, and films. Monophenyl terephthalate is also used as a precursor in the synthesis of other esters and as a reagent in organic chemistry.
