The action of phosphorus pentachloride on 5,6-dichloroacenaphthylene-1,2-dione leads to the formation of 2,2,5,6-tetrachloroacenaphthylene-1(2H)-one and not 1,1,2,2,5,6-hexachloroacenaphthene as believed earlier. 2,2,5,6-Tetrachloroacenaphthylen-1(2H)-one is dehalogenated by zinc dust to 5,6-dichloroacenaphthylen-1(2H)-one.When heated in 90percent sulfuric acid, it is hydrolyzed to 5,6-dichloroacenaphthylene-1,2-dione.
