Osmium(VII) fluorine compounds
Shorafa, Hashem,Seppelt, Konrad
, p. 7929 - 7934 (2008/10/09)
Of the four published osmium fluorine compounds in the oxidation state +7, OsO3F, OsO2F3, OsOF5, and OsF 7, only one (OsOF5) is a real Os(VII) compound. OsO 3F has obviously been OsO4. OsO2F3 in its two modifications is a mixed-valence Os(VI)/Os(VIII) compound, whereas a new compound Os2O3F7 is a mixed-valence OsV/Os(VIII) compound. The molecular structures of OsO3F, OsO 2F3, and OsO3F2 are calculated. OsO3F2 seems to exist in two forms, with D3h and Cs symmetry. The original preparation of OsF7 could not be reproduced, only OsF6 has been obtained.

The vapour species produced by heating solid osmium trifluoride dioxide in vacuo have been isolated in low-temperature matrices and also studied by mass spectrometry. Both studies indicate a complex mode of decomposition, and in addition to the identification of OsOF4 (C4v) and OsO3F2 (D3h) the i.r. spectra show additional features at 907 and 655 cm-1 which are assigned as ν(Os=O) and ν(Os-F) respectively in molecular OsO2F3.A D3h structure is proposed for this species by comparison with other heavy-metal oxide fluorides.

The title compounds OsOF5, OsOF4, and OsO3F2 have been isolated as monomeric species in inert-gas matrices at low temperatures, and studied by i.r. and u.v.-visible spectroscopy. In particular, the electronic spectra of these three molecules are described for the first time, and the principal charge-transfer bands assigned. The i.r. spectrum of molecular OsOF4 is also reported for the first time, and shows prominent absorption at ca. 1079 (Os=O) and ca. 685 cm-1 (Os-F) consistent with C4V geometry.
