Some Minor Products of Prins Reaction on (+)-Car-3-ene

Prins reaction on (+)-car-3-ene (I) affords, in addition to the major products like car-2-ene-4α-methanol (II) and its acetate (VII), some minor products, which have been isolated by chromatography and characterised by spectral data.These include the tricyclic ether (VIII) and the dioxan derivative (XI).The mechanism of the formation of VIII from II is discussed.When the Prins reaction is carried out for a prolonged period, in addition to the above products, an acetate, C13H20O2 is obtained which is assigned structure (XIII) on the basis of spectral data.
