Reactions of 1-[2-(1-naphthyl-1H-tetrazole-5-sulfhydryl)]methyl-5-pyridine (L) with ZnCl2, CdCl2·2.5H2O and CuBr2, three complexes [ZnLCl2] (1), [CdL 2(SCN)2] (2) and [CuL 2Br2] (3) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy. In complex 1, the C-H...Cl intermolecular hydrogen bonds have governed the supramolecular contacts and made it into a 3D supramolecular structure, which can be rationalized to be a (4466) topology when the centroid of each molecular was treated as a five-connected node with five other molecules around it. There exist C-H...S and C-H...N hydrogen bonds in complex 2, which make the whole molecular into a 2D sheet structure with topological symbol of (63), when the centroid of each molecular was treated as a six-connected node with six other molecules around it. In complex 3, the hydrogen bond links the molecular into 1D chain structure and the ligand connects one metal ion through its N atom only from the pyridine ring of the L, while the ligand connects one metal ion through both its N atom from the pyridine ring and the N atom from the tetrazole ring in complex 1 and 2. Also the photoluminescence properties at room temperature for complex 1 and 2 have been investigated.
