A novel approach to the synthesis of mono- and dipyrroloporphyrins was discussed. The syntheses were based on a 1,5-electrocyclic ring closure followed by autoxidation of azomethine ylides, generated by the reaction of the nickel complexes of β-formylporphyrin derivatives with N-substituted glycines. A new product was formed with less reactive compounds along with the expected adducts. The structure of this new compound did not incorporate the dipolarophile used.
