(1S,3S)-[1alpha,2alpha,4alpha,6alpha]-3-(5,5,6-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-yl)cyclohexan-1-ol, also known as 3-trans-isocamphylcyclohexanol, is a synthetic mixture of terpenylcyclohexanol isomers that is responsible for the sandalwood odor. It is prepared by reacting camphene and guaiacol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, followed by catalytic hydrogenation of the resulting terpenylguaiacols. The actual content of the desired isomer is low in most products, but a process starting from catechol instead of guaiacol yields a higher content of the desired isomer.
