The present invention relates to new compositions and methods for the regulation of plant growth, especially for prevention of lodging, promotion of fruit abscission, acceleration of ripening and sap flow, breaking of seed dormancy, advancement of sprouting, inhibition of germination and rhizome development or inhibition by utilizing a coacting mixture of a N-heterocyclic amide having one hetero-nitrogen atom per 5- or 6- membered ring and a haloalkyl silane having the formula: STR1 wherein X is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom; Y and Z are each independently --OR; halogen; alkenyl of 3 to 8 carbon atoms or alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, both optionally substituted with halogen, lower alkoxy or phenyl; benzyl or phenyl, both optionally substituted with halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; and R is hydrogen; alkenyloxy of 2 to 8 carbon atoms or alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, both optionally substituted with halogen, or alkoxy; benzyl or phenyl, both optionally substituted with halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy and mixtures of said silanes and said amides.

A process for the production of trialkoxy-β-halogenoethylsilanes and dialkoxy-methyl-β-halogenoethylsilanes by reaction of a corresponding β-halogenoethyltrichlorosilane or β-halogenoethyl-methyldichlorosilane with an alcohol in the presence of ammonia is disclosed. The trialkoxy-β-halogenoethylsilanes and dialkoxy-methyl-β-halogenoethylsilanes obtained by this process are active substances for regulating plant growth.

The present invention relates to new compositions and methods for the regulation of plant growth, especially for fruit abscission, acceleration of ripening and latex discharge and to new active substances of the class of β-halogenoethyl-methyl-silanes. The active substances in the new compositions respond to the formula STR1 wherein X is chlorine or bromine, each of the radicals R1 and R2 independently represent substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radicals, alkenyl, halogenalkenyl, alkynyl and cycloalkyl radicals, substituted or unsubstituted phenyl and benzyl radicals; one or each of the symbols R1 and R2 can also represent the group --COR3 wherein R3 stands for an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl or alkenyl radical, a possible phenyl substituent being itself substituted or not, for an alkynyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, benzoylalkyl or phenyl radical the latter being optionally substituted or for a heterocyclic radical; R1 and R2, also with the signification of --COR3 can also form together with the adjacent atoms a silicon-containing heterocyclic ring system. The β-bromoethyl-methyl-silanes (X=Br) of the above formula and all those β-chloroethyl-methyl-silanes (X=Cl) wherein not both radicals R1 and R2 represent the methyl group, are new compounds.
