The tubers of Pueraria tuberosa elicit two pterocarpenes, anhydrotuberosin and 3-O-methylanhydrotuberosin and a coumestan, tuberostan, all incorporating a dimethylchromene ring in their structures.Structures 1,3 and 4 have been respectivly assigned to these on the basis of spectral data, chemical interconversions and degradative studies. The changes in chemical shifts in 13C NMR on going from pterocarpan to 6a-hydroxypterocarpan and pterocarpene are discussed.
