Reaction of N-arylsulfonyl-l,4-benzoquinone monoimines with p-toluidine

In the uncatalysed reaction of N-arylsulfonyl-l,4-benzoquinonemonoimines and p-toluidine occurs predominantly 1,2-addition - elimination. If there is no substituent ortho to oxygen 1,4-addition takes place; with halogen as substituent occurs nucleophilic substitution. The reaction rate grows with increasing redox potential of the quinone imine.
