The reaction of alkylcopper(I) compounds, RCu, with 2,4-pentadiynyl methanesulfinates, R'-CC-CC-CR"R"'-OS(O)Me (1), shows a regiochemistry that depends on the size of R,R', R" and R"'.If the group R' is methyl or trimethylsilyl, the reaction is regiospecific and leads to pure allenynes R'-C-C(R)=C=CR"R"' (2).Mixtures of allenynes 2 and pentatetraenes RR'C=C=C=C=CR"R"' (3), however, may arise when 1, in which R' is hydrogen, is used as substrate.
