Mono- and tri-topic ligands, based on dipyrromethenes and the 1,10-phenanthroline nucleus, as well as BF2 complexes derived thereof are described. While BODIPY 12 has been X-ray crystallographically characterized, the structural features of the free ligands 9 and 10 may render them useful as precursors for the elaboration of novel supramolecular architectures.

Dipyrromethane-2,10-dicarboxylates have been prepared. While oxidation and subsequent reaction of 5b with BF3·OEt2 yields the corresponding complex 10, ring-closing metathesis of 5d using (NHC)(PCy3)(Cl)2Ru=CHPh 7 results in the novel hybrid macrocycle 8. The structure of 10 has been unequivocally established by an X-ray crystallographic study.
