2-(aziridin-1-yl)-3-methylnaphthalene-1,4-dione, also known as mitomycin C, is a naturally occurring antibiotic and antitumor agent. It is produced by the bacterium Streptomyces caespitosus and is used in the treatment of various cancers, including stomach, pancreas, and bladder cancers. Mitomycin C works by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and disrupting their DNA synthesis, ultimately leading to cell death. It is commonly administered by injection and is often used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to enhance its effectiveness.
