1,2-Dihydropentalene (9), obtained from cyclooctatetraene, can be reduced by LiAlH4 to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropentalene (2) and 1,2,3,5-tetrahydropentalene (3).Kinetic control for the preparation of 2 and thermodynamic control for 3 are favourable.The comparable addition of tert-butyllithium leads to the substituted tetrahydropentalenes 17-19.Introduction of deuterium and comprehensive 1H- and 13C-NMR measurements serve for the structure elucidation and for the investigation of the equilibria between the isomeric tetrahydropentalenes.
