1-(2'-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)thymine, also known as thymidine, is a nucleoside composed of the pyrimidine base thymine and the sugar deoxyribose. It is a key component of DNA, where it forms base pairs with adenine, and plays a crucial role in genetic information storage and replication. Thymidine is also used in the synthesis of acyclovir, a medication used to treat herpes simplex virus infections. In addition, it is a common precursor in the synthesis of antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV. Thymidine is important for cell growth and repair and is a fundamental building block for DNA synthesis and repair.
