Dimethyldioxirane (DMDO) oxidizes the coordinated alkyne ligand in (RCp)Mn(CO)2(diarylalkyne) (3) to give moderate yields of the corresponding α-keto carbene complex (RCp)Mn(CO)2(C(Ar)C(O)(Ar)) (5), thus illustrating the synthetic potential of dioxiranes for the controlled oxidation of coordinated ligands. The transformation 3 → 5 might involve initial alkyne epoxidation to give an intermediate containing a coordinated oxirene ligand.
