N,N'-Bis(salicylideneamino)oxamide, also known as salicylaldoxime, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C14H12N2O4. It is a chelating agent used in the extraction and purification of metal ions, particularly nickel and palladium. The compound is formed by the condensation of two molecules of salicylaldehyde with one molecule of oxamide, resulting in a Schiff base structure. New palladium (II) oxaloyldihydrazone complexes are reported and characterized. The mode of bonding as well as the structure of the isolated compounds have been ascertained on the basis of data obtained from elemental analyses (CHNM), spectral (UV-Vis., IR, mass and 1H NMR) and thermal (TG and DTA) measurements. Some optical parameters such as indirect optical band gap and refractive index were estimated for the isolated compounds. The complexes [{VO(CH3O)(CH3OH)}2(L2)] (5), [{Cu(CH3OH)}2(L2)] (6), [{Mn(H 2O)2(CH3OH)}2(L2)] (7) and [{TiO(CH3OH)}2(L2)]·2H2O (8) were synthesized by the reaction of corresponding metal salts with H 4L2. All complexes were characterized by microanalyses, FT-IR, UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopic methods. The crystal structures of 1 and 5 were established by X-ray analyses. Compound 1 is a one-dimensional coordination polymer. The catalytic potential of the complexes was evaluated for oxidation of hydrocarbons including cycloalkenes, cyclic alkanes and benzylalcohol using H2O2 as terminal oxidant. Of the studied aroylhydrazone complexes, 4 showed the best selectivity and activity as catalyst.

A new binuclear oxovanadium(V) complex bearing an NO2-donor Schiff base ligand, [{VO(EtO)(EtOH)}2(1κ2O,κN: 2κ2O,κN-L)]·2H2O (H4L = bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)oxalohydrazonic acid) was prepared and fully characterized by IR, 1H NMR and electronic spectroscopies, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the presence of 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid (PCA) or another acid promoter, this compound acts as a highly efficient pre-catalyst towards the oxidation of gaseous and liquid alkanes by aqueous H2O2 under mild conditions, in aqueous MeCN. Total yields of oxygenates up to 45% and overall turnover numbers up to 7.8 × 103 are achieved.
