PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stabilizer compound that prevents deterioration of a liquid crystal composition with high compatibility with the liquid crystal composition without sacrificing storage stability of the liquid crystal composition, and can be simply produced. SOLUTION: The invention provides a compound represented by general formula (i), and a liquid crystal composition and a display element that contain the compound. (In the formula, Zi1 represents a group shown in the figure; Yi1 represents a polyvalent group derived from cyclohexane, benzene, biphenyl or naphthalene; and ti1 represents 1, 2, 3 or 4.) A 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone spiroketal carbinol compound of Formula I STR1 in which R1 represents an alkyl group having from one to six carbon atoms, is prepared by heating a trimethylolalkane compound having the formula R1 --C(CH2 OH)3 with a 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone ketal compound of Formula II STR2 in which R2 represents an alkyl group having from one to twelve carbon atoms or an ether-interrupted alkyl group having from three to twelve carbon atoms and from one to two ether oxygen atoms, removing alcohol R2 OH, and recovering 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone spiroketal carbinol compound of Formula I.
