5BETA-CHOLANIC ACID, also known as Cholanoic Acid, is a bile acid derived from the metabolism of cholesterol in the liver. It is a component of bile, which aids in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. 5BETA-CHOLANIC ACID is structurally similar to Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), but it is considered an impurity in the pharmaceutical preparation of UDCA.
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
5BETA-CHOLANIC ACID is used as an impurity in the production of Ursodeoxycholic Acid (U850000), which is an anticholelithogenic agent. Ursodeoxycholic Acid is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones and treat various liver diseases, such as primary biliary cirrhosis and cholestasis. However, 5BETA-CHOLANIC ACID itself is not used directly for these applications due to its impurity status.
