Pyrvinium, also known as Pyrvinium pamoate or Pyrvinium embonate, is a naturally occurring quaternary ammonium compound derived from the African plant Pyrvinium venenosum. It is primarily used as an anthelmintic drug to treat certain parasitic worm infections, such as ascariasis and enterobiasis. Pyrvinium works by paralyzing the worms, which then allows them to be expelled from the body through natural bowel movements. The drug is administered orally and has been used since the 1950s. However, due to its potential side effects and the availability of newer, safer alternatives, its use has become less common in recent years.
