Direct Violet 51 is an azo dye characterized by its λmax of 549 nm, which gives it a blue-purple hue. It is a purple powder that is soluble in water and soluble fiber elements, slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, and insoluble in other organic solvents. The dye exhibits different color shades when exposed to various acids, with strong sulfuric acid turning it dark green with a blue-ray, and nitric acid turning it blue-ray in green to dark brown. The dye solution changes to blue and precipitates when mixed with strong hydrochloric acid, and turns purple with precipitation when mixed with a thick sodium hydroxide solution. It has a solubility of 15 g/L at 60°C and 25 g/L at 97°C and is not sensitive to light. Direct Violet 51 is classified as an A class SDC dye.
