Metripro, also known as Metrifonate, is an organophosphate compound that was initially developed as an anthelmintic drug to treat parasitic worm infections. It is a prodrug, meaning it is inactive when administered and is converted into its active form, the neurotoxin trichlorfon, within the body. Trichlorfon works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system in both humans and parasites. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, causing paralysis and death in the parasites. Metripro was used primarily in veterinary medicine for treating infections caused by roundworms and other helminths in livestock and pets. However, due to concerns over its potential neurotoxic effects and the development of resistance in parasites, its use has been largely discontinued in recent years.
