Herein, we report an unprecedented and sustainable route to synthesize pyromellitic acid (PMA), a monomer of polyimide, with pinacol and diethyl maleate which can be derived from lignocellulose. Analogously, a sustainable route to trimellitic acid (TMA) was also developed using pinacol and acrylate as the feedstocks.

, p. 1653 - 1657 (2007/10/02)
The reaction of Wittig reagents with elemental selenium gave the corresponding selenoaldehydes which further reacted with other Wittig reagents to give the corresponding dimeric olefins in good yields. The selenoaldehydes formed afforded corresponding adducts by the reaction with dienes. These selenoaldehydes obtained by retro Diels-Alder reaction were also found to react with Wittig reagents to give the corresponding olefins in good yields.
NICKEL(O)-KATALYSIERTE CYCLOADDITIONEN VON (DIORGANYLMETHYLEN)CYCLOPROPANEN MIT ELEKTRONENARMEN OLEFINEN
Binger, Paul,Wedemann, Petra
, p. 5847 - 5850 (2007/10/02)
Cycloadditions of (diorganylmethylene)cyclopropanes (R = Ph; CH3) with electron-deficient olefins are catalyzed by trisarylphosphite - Ni(O)-compounds to give (diorganylmethylene)cyclopentane derivatives in high yields.
