A multi-responsiveness supramolecular metal-organic gel (MOG) has been prepared by using silver (I) nitrate and a simple ligand (L17) based on a biscarboxyl-functionalised benzimidazole derivative. The MOG that displays the formation of well-developed nanofibrillar networks composed of intertwined fibres was characterised by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The FT-IR spectra and XRD show that supramolecular MOG was formed through an effective coordination of the ligand and Ag +. This MOG reveals outstanding reversible sol-gel transitions induced by changes of temperature and pH, as well as by addition of NH4OH, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and Na2S. In addition, the MOG also shows a good ability in dye sorption. These results demonstrate that this multichannel responsive smart MOG has the potential to be widely applied in materials science. 2013

First simple and mild synthesis of 2-alkylbenzimidazoles involving a supported enzymatic catalyst

A new enzymatic synthesis is described for 2-alkyl-benzimidazoles a technologically important class of compounds. It is a one-step synthesis which involves a supported enzyme (Lipozyme) and is carried out in very mild conditions in hydrocarbon solvents to give 2-alkyl-benzimidazoles in good yields, starting from the free acids. Preliminary results indicate that the reaction has a potential to produce new molecules using sensitive or conjugated acids. A new and efficient method for preparation of benzimidazoles, benzoxazoles, and benzothiazoles from reactions of different carboxylic acids with o-phenylenediamine, o-aminophenol, and o-aminothiophenol in the presence of triphenylphosphine/trichloroisocyanuric acid system is presented. The desired products have been characterised on the basis of spectral (infrared, NMR, mass spectrometry) data, and the mechanism of their formation is proposed. The remarkable advantages are the inexpensive and readily available reagent, simple procedure, mild conditions, and good-to-excellent yields.

A novel synthetic method for the preparation of aliphatic aldehydes from the corresponding carboxylic acids via 1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolium salts is provided. 1,3-Dimethylbenzimidazolium salts were rapidly reduced with sodium/ethanol and then hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid to obtain aliphatic aldehydes, in which the 1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolium salts can be readily achieved from the corresponding carboxylic acids. The mechanism for the reductive reaction of 1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolium salts with sodium/ethanol was discussed.

Solvent-free domino acylation/cyclization reactions between fatty acid esters and o-phenylenediamine mediated by immobilized lipase from Mucor miehei (MML) were found to be an efficient way in the synthesis of 2- alkylbenzimidazole. Compared with other substrates, methyl fatty acid esters with moderated chain length exhibited best activity with yield up to 95%. The mechanism of the domino process was clarified deeply through some detail experiments, including separation of intermediates. This efficient enzymatic domino process provides an attractive procedure for heterocyclic compound synthesis and could be regarded as a potential synthetic method in modern organic chemistry.

A range of 2-substituted 4,5-dihydroimidazoles and 2-substituted 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidines when heated with an excess of substituted ethane-1,2-diamines, o-phenylenediamines, and propane-1,3-diamine underwent diamine exchange to give 2-substituted heterocycles derived from the solvent diamine.The reaction was an equilibrium process favouring six-membered rings.The synthetic scope is amplified by the ready aromatisation of these partially reduced heterocycles.
