Substituents effects and directional selectivity in iodine-induced cycloisomerization reaction of metacyclophane were tested using several derivatives of the latter.The reaction was found to be highly selective, and electrondonating groups gave a hexahydropyrene preserving a subsituted aryl ring.On the other hand, an alkyl group ortho to the bridge gave a hexahydropyrene with a hydrogenated substituted ring.
