1,4-Benzenediol, 3,5-dimethoxy-2-(2-propenyl)- (9CI) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C12H16O4. It is also known as Safrole, and it is commonly found in certain essential oils such as sassafras oil and nutmeg oil. Safrole is a colorless or slightly yellow oily liquid with a sweet, spicy odor, and it is used in the synthesis of fragrances, perfumes, and as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages. However, it is also a precursor in the illicit manufacture of the drug MDMA (ecstasy) and has been classified as a controlled substance in some countries due to its potential for abuse and for its carcinogenic properties.
