Photo-responsive polymers and their applications to optical memory

, p. 41 - 50 (2006)
We synthesized photo-responsive azo polymers from novel malonic ester and silicate ester monomers having two symmetrical azobenzene groups in the side chain. The possibility of their applications as reversible data storage media was investigated utilizing optical data recording techniques. As a result, the azo polymers had very excellent stability and resolution of the stored data as well as the sensitivity to pump beam. The polymeric thin films also could be used as erasable digital data materials for a practical use by an Ar ion pulse laser (pulse width: 10 s). In addition, the polymeric thick films (500-1000 m) from new monomer and methyl methacrylate showed good angular selectivity for holographic memory by using optical two wave mixing technique.
Determination of transition rate constants of trans-cis isomerization in a poly(malonic ester) containing disperse red 1

, p. 1677 - 1681 (2002)
A method for obtaining the quantitative transition rate constants of trans-cis isomerization in the pseudo-stilbene-type of azobenzene molecule was discussed. The absorbances of the solution and film of a poly(malonic ester) containing disperse red 1(PDR1) were measured with the pumping beams intensity and were analyzed by the rate equation for the fractions of trans and cis conformers. The rate constants of PDR1 solution and film were also determined.
