VERACEVINE is a steroidal alkaloid that is epimeric with Cevine, isolated from species of Schoenocaulon. It is a cyclic hemiketal with an oxygen bridge from the 4alpha to the 9 position and is substituted by hydroxy groups at the 3beta, 4beta, 12, 14, 16beta, 17, and 20 positions. In highly concentrated solutions, VERACEVINE exhibits a positive Cotton effect, and it has been shown that ring A exists in a twist form. In ethanol solution, the alkaloid exists in the ketol form to the extent of 0.4-0.6 per cent.
