Stability Constants of Complexes of Some Lanthanides with N-Acetylacetonylidene-orthanilic Acid

Stability constants of the chelates of La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III) and Ho(III) with N-acetylacetonylidene-orthanilic acid (H2AO) have been determined by Irving and Rossotti pH-titration technique in aqueous media at 25 deg C, 35 deg C and 45 deg C.Thermodynamic stability constants have been obtained by extrapolation at various ionic strengths (μ = 0.1, 0.05 and 0.1M NaClO4).The order of stability constants found is, La(III) > Ce(III) > Pr(III) > Nd(III) > Sm(III) > Gd(III) > Tb(III) > Dy(III) > Ho(III) which is in agreement with the findings of stagg and Powell .Magnetic moment, conductance and IR spectral data of the solid lanthanon chelates suggest an octahedral stereochemistry.
