Aromatic aldehydes and 3-methyl-2-butanone react with gaseous hydrogen chloride to yield depending on the substituents 4-aryl-4-chloro-3,3-dimethyl-2-butanones 3, 1-aryl-4-methyl-1-penten-3-ones 4, and 5-aryl-3-isopropyl-6,6-dimethyl-2-cyclohexenones 5.In some cases the 2,6-diaryltetrahydro-3,3-dimethyl-4H-pyran-4-ones 7-12 were isolated, too.
