Reaction between 2-mercaptonicotinic acid and o-phenylenediamine afforded 2-(2-mercapto-3-pyridyl)benzimidazole which underwent oxidative cyclization with bromine to give pyridoisothiazolobenzimidazole, a novel ring system.
