Novel 1-[β-(R-thio)phenethyl]-imidazoles and the corresponding 1-[β-(R-sulfinyl)phenethyl]imidazoles and 1-[β-(R-sulfonyl)phenethyl]imidazoles wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl, aralkenyl, substituted aralkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkyl alkyl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, aryl or substituted aryl; and the antimicrobial acid addition salts thereof, are useful as antifungal, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoal agents.

Novel 1-phenethylimidazoles substituted at the position β to the imidazole ring by an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl carbonate or a mono-, di-, or trithiocarbonate are useful as antimicrobial agents and as intermediates in the preparation of novel 1-phenethylimidazoles substituted at the position β to the imidazole with a mercapto. Both the former and latter compounds are useful as intermediates in the preparation of certain 1-[β-(R-thio)phenethyl]imidazoles.
