It is a colorless, oily liquid that is soluble in organic solvents and has a pungent odor. O,O,O,O-tetramethyl thiodiphosphate is a derivative of phosphoric acid, where the oxygen atoms in the phosphate group are replaced by sulfur atoms, and the hydrogen atoms are replaced by methyl groups. O,O,O,O-tetramethyl thiodiphosphate is primarily used as an insecticide and acaricide, functioning by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system in insects. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing overstimulation and ultimately paralysis and death of the target pests. Due to its high toxicity and potential environmental impact, its use is regulated in many countries.
