A composition and method for inhibiting the growth of plants, mono- and dicotyledonous plants such as soya, tobacco cereal grass, ornamental plants are disclosed. The active principle is benzoic acids and esters corresponding to formula STR1 wherein R is hydrogen, C1 -C12 alkyl unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, nitro, cyano, C1 -C4 alkoxy, C1 -C4 alkylcarbonyl, C1 -C4 alkylamino, di-C1 -C4 -alkylamino, C3 -C6 cycloalkyl, furyl, tetrahydrofuryl, phenyl that may be substituted by halogen or methyl; C2 -C20 alkenyl; C2 -C20 halogenoalkenyl; C2 -C4 alkinyl; C3 -C20 cycloalkyl; phenyl, unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, C1 -C4 alkyl; C1 -C4 alkoxy; C1 -C4 alkylthio; C1 -C2 halogenoalkyl, cyano or nitro; X is oxygen or sulfur. Some of the esters are disclosed here for the first time.
