The dilatometric technique used to study the smectic polymorphis of all the even terms from n equals 4 to n equals 18 of the homologous series of 4,4 prime -di(p,n-alcoxybenzylideneamino) biphenyls is described. The polymorphic transitions are characterized by a rapid increase of the volume within a narrow temperature range. Apart from the crystal, the isotropic phase, and eventually the nematic one, all the terms of the series show on heating three smectic phases. The transition temperatures between these phases are determined. The only transition that has been found not to be reversible, is the transition between the crystal and the first smectic phase; on cooling, this transition exhibits a strong hysteresis indicative of the crystallization of the paraffin tails of the molecules; the kinetics of this crystallization is described. The values of the molar volumes are reported as a function of temperature. The accuracy of these determinations is believed not to exceed 0. 1%.
