Mamanine is a novel alkaloid found in the bark of Sophora chrysophylla and is obtained in the form of colorless crystals of the dihydrate. It has a melting point of 100-104°C after prior melting at 100-104°C followed by resolidification. The base has been characterized as the crystalline cyclohexylsulphonate with a melting point of 245-252°C and the diacetate which forms colorless needles that decompose on standing at room temperature. Mamaine is an intermediate in a previously unknown biogenetic pathway of the Sophora alkaloids.
