Diethylstilbestrol epoxide (DES) is a synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen compound that is structurally similar to the naturally occurring hormone estrogen. It was initially synthesized in the 1940s and was widely prescribed to pregnant women between the 1940s and 1970s to prevent miscarriages and complications. However, it was later discovered that DES exposure during pregnancy can lead to severe health issues in both the mother and the offspring, including an increased risk of certain cancers, reproductive system abnormalities, and developmental issues. Due to these risks, DES was banned for use in humans in the United States in 1971. The chemical structure of DES consists of two ethyl groups attached to a stilbene backbone, which allows it to mimic the effects of estrogen in the body.
