Hydrogen atom transfers relayed by oxygen atoms have been studied on a model compound: 3,3-dimethyl-4-hydroxy butan-2-one 1.Fragmentation mechanisms as well as the structure of ions (C6H10O)+., (C5H10O)+. and (C4H10O)+. resulting from a loss of H2O, CH2O and CH2CO respectively from the molecular ion of 1 have been established through isotopic labeling and a study of the uni- and bi-molecular decompositions and of the thermodynamic data. The structure of the ion resulting from loss of H2O was found identical to that of the molecular ion of methyl isopropylidene ketone.Loss of CH2O is via McLafferty rearrangement. The ionised enol of the methyl isopropyl ketone produced looses fifteen mass units corresponding to a methyl group, the origin of which has been determined. The loss of CH2CO is assumed to be a molecule of ketene. The ion (C4H10O)+. extrudes specifically a molecule of water to give an ion (C4H8)+..The study of these various fragmentations involving hydrogen atom transfers relayed by oxygen atoms has shed light on the respective roles played by each of the two oxygen atoms of the hydroxy ketone 1.
