3-methylbutan-2-yl methylphosphonofluoridate, also known as (±)-VX, is a highly toxic organophosphorus compound that belongs to the class of chemical warfare agents. It is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless liquid at room temperature, making it difficult to detect. The chemical structure consists of a phosphorus atom bonded to a methyl group, a fluorine atom, and an alkyl chain derived from 3-methylbutan-2-ol. VX is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine in the nervous system, causing overstimulation and ultimately leading to respiratory failure and death. It is considered more toxic than sarin and soman due to its greater stability and persistence in the environment. The compound was first synthesized in 1952 by a British chemist, and its potential as a chemical weapon was later recognized. Today, VX is strictly regulated under international law, and its production, stockpiling, and use are prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
