NH2 radicals were generated by the photolysis of O2 in the presence of NH3 and their subsequent kinetics were directly monitored by laser resonance absorption spectroscopy.Under our experimental conditions, NH2 + O3 and NH2 + NH2 were competitive reactions. The rate constant for NH2 + O3 was found to be (1.57 +/- 0.51)E-11 exp(-(1151 +/- 123)/T) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 in the temperature range 272-348 K while the rate constant for NH2 + NH2 was found to be (1.29 +/- 0.30)E-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 298 K and essentially independent of temperature at a pressure of ca. 200 torr.O2 was added to the system in an attempt to observe a postulated third-order reaction leading to the formation of NH2OO.An upper limit of 1.5E-36 cm6 molecule-2 s-1 was set for this process indicating that bonding between NH2 and O2 is negligible.
