N, N'-DIPHENYL-1,2-NAPHTHOQUINONE-3-CARBOXAMIDINE 1-PHENYLHYDRAZONE AND ITS 1:1 SOLVATE WITH DIMETHYLFORMAMIDE

N,N'-Diphenyl-1,2-naphthoquinone-3-carboxamidine 1-phenylhydrazone is described.An x-ray crystallographic investigation of its 1:1 crystal solvate with dimethylformamide was undertaken.On account of the steric strains the amidine group in the solvate is directed almost perpendicular to the phenylhydrazoquinone fragment.The formation of an intermolecular hydrogen bond with the participation of the amide hydrogen and the DMFA molecule leads to some destabilization of the hydrazoquinone tautomeric from (which nevertheless remains predominant) and to an increase in the contribution from the azo form, and this shows p in a large degree of shortening of the H...O distance .It is proposed to regard the crystal solvate as a model which reflects the effect of the solvents on the tautomeric state of pigments of the investigated type in solutions.
