The benzylation of m- and p- alkyltoluenes (Alk = Bu, Am) in the presence of zinc chloride, titanium tetrachloride, and ferric chloride leads to the formation of mixtures of tert-alkyl-2-methyldiphenylmethanes, methyl-2-tert-alkyldiphenylmethanes, and methyldiphenylmethanes. 3-Methyl-5-tert-alkyldiphenylmethanes are also formed during the benzylation of m-tert-alkyltoluenes.Under the influence of titanium tetrachloride and ferric chloride methyl-2-tert alkyldiphenylmethanes undergo transformation with the elimination of the tert-alkyl and benzyl groups.
